We crossed the famous Strait of Belle Isle! 🎉
This crossing was full of novelties! Waiting for the right weather window to leave for Greenland, we're writing to you from Mary's Harbour in the Canadian province of Labrador.
⛰ At the beginning of June we arrived in Newfoundland, at Norris Point. We were the only sailboat in our anchorage in Gros Morne National Park. We didn't go unnoticed; it was as if the whole village had come to see the sailboat. Thibault was even featured on the local radio station run by a particularly welcoming local. We'll be sure to share the link with you in the next newsletter!
By chance, the building we first took for a harbour master's office was in fact a Marine Station where several students of marine sciences were working: what luck! From then on, we made friends and visited their world through : 🔥 A wood fire on the beach at sunset where ricochets and Mink's whale were the order of the day, 🏃♂️ A game of ultimate Frisbee to stretch our legs, 🌊 Participation in an ocean quiz in honor of Ocean Week, 📚 Access to their library of a thousand oceanographic books!
🗣 They also discovered our daily routine, which we presented to them on their premises. This group of students was very curious, and the teachers were intrigued and fascinated by our scientific instruments. We were delighted to talk to people who know exactly what it's like to work in the field!
🧊 Then it wasn't long before we had to make our way up the Strait of Belle-Isle, which is as magnificent as it is fearsome! All went wonderfully well, thanks to a motivated crew and a well-trained captain! We came across seals braving the foggy seas with ease, and above all... the first icebergs! We'll tell you more in the iodized anecdote at the end of this newsletter.
We made several hop-on hop-off stops along the way, and here's a quick list of them: 🎣 Port-aux-Choix, its fishy smell and fishermen's houses. 🌱 Red Bay, its wood stored in teepees, its seagulls and the mosses that carpet its floor. 🐻 Chateau Harbour, where Yana and Hugo saw a bear and touched an iceberg! Of course, it was also an opportunity for our Kosmos Camera to visit the seabed. 🌲 And finally, Mary's Harbour, to get ready for the departure to Greenland! We're there with two other sailboats, Ladybird and Petit Pays. We witnessed the hottest day of the year there, at 25 degrees! It's very unusual. Yana and Margot took the opportunity to dive and clean the hull of the beautiful Carlina.
