Vision

More sustainable field science through frugality and student community engagement

We want to encourage more sustainable science and bring students closer to field science, to contribute to the understanding and preservation of the ocean.

Furthermore, the foundation of our research is to promote open science. We believe that by staying in touch with students, scientists and local stakeholders, we can make our advances accessible to anyone who wants to learn more about the wonders of the ocean.

Scientific Will

Terrain Science

To give tomorrow’s engineers the opportunity to put theories into practice by getting closer to field science and real conditions.

Open Science

To feed existing databases in free access with the protocols, the instruments and the data collected on board. To popularize our work to make it accessible to the greatest number of people.

Frugal Science

To prove that a more accessible, simpler, less expensive and more sustainable science is possible for ocean research in sailing boats.

Responsible Science

To practice field science that is less invasive, less polluting and as environmentally friendly as possible.

Bringing students closer to field science

Combining the potential of embedded frugal science and student dynamism to address the challenges of field research and environmental issues.

Sailowtech gives students the opportunity to integrate field projects into their academic curriculum through the organization of scientific sailing expeditions and the design and validation of frugal scientific instruments and methods for sailing boats during semester projects supervised by laboratories within the EPFL campus (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne).

We are proud to have been recognized by EPFL as a MAKE project, attesting to our recognition as a full-fledged scientific project, giving us the means to develop our scientific projects and to bring tomorrow’s engineers closer to field science!

Sailowtech aims at continuity and seamless transmission. The projects of some will be the starting point of the project of others. Thus, our expedition models and instruments will be improved as we iterate and advise.

In a desire to lower the boundaries of the scientific world, we aim for robustness and easy reproducibility of all experimental protocols as well as documentation and sharing of our work according to the principles of Open Sciences in order to encourage a more accessible, supportive and participatory science.
